soft salt water And all I see is you And a fool in love Just a fool still in love All the tears that shine Tears I didn t know it was possible to oppress people to the point that they were oblivious Carol Craig s treatise on the long suffering ill health and social poverty in Glasgow is an immensely relatable and well researched read Although many of the issues she raises are distinctly bleak and distressing acknowledging these as facts made me feel less alone and less inadeuate as a young person who grew up in a working class Glasgow council estateMuch of the book puts forwards the case that Glasgow is not the uintessential post industrial city drawing on Robert Wilkinson s theories that link international income euality to social problems rather than average income itself This argument is compelling charting Glasgow s past as a small dense city which had an extremely small middleprofessional class when the heavy industries grew up in the 1800s leaving a huge euality gap between the land owners and impoverished workers paid less than unskilled English euivalents and housed in a higher density of backlands than anywhere else in Europe A uote from Willa Muir puts this elouently It is relatively easy to be proud and poor when everyone of conseuence is poor it is far from easy when money begins to spread itself Prior to full legal unification with England the Scottish upper class cast poverty as a moral issue in a way that it remains today as a shame and a sin in Glasgow Nenadic argues that social relationships broke down and the poor became anonymous Glasgow lacked strong trade unions and working class solidarity because of greater divisions within the poorest classes based on location of emigration gender and unsurprisingly the ferocity of its sectarianism that weird warped creature that haunts the Scottish psche With historical information spanning three hundred years Craig makes an emphatic case that history is forcing us out of the automatic assumption that the problem is primarily about material resourcesThe author s analysis of Glaswegian culture is also deeply resonant and takes some the aching loneliness out of being a part of that culture by seeing such clear psychosocial arguments for its development For example she describes the increased ineuality as an explanation for why some high performing working class Glaswegians are left with the experience of shunned as a leper Here Craig relies on many first hand accounts personal experience and the work of acclaimed Scottish writers such as Alisdair Gray Archie Hind Janice Galloway and Cathy McCormack which she analyses with great intelligent and sensitivity many Glasgow novels report a great deal of alienation from the community Some of the imagery is striking too strong willed to become the martyr with the pinched face who never goes out of the house The data to give a objective psychological analysis of the city s emotional patterns is simply not currently available but this is a yawning chasm in Craig s account an essential if understated demand to carry out this research Glasgow s damaged inward affective disorder culture is laid bare She expresses the narrow minded values policed by other working class people on each other with deep clarity The term respectability has always been ambiguous but for men it involved being thrifty sober and financially independent For women respectability was conferred not on the basis of sexual morality but also on the appearance of cleanliness She describes the effect of heavy industry segregating men and women and women s inability to enter that world as a reason for poor relations between genders and the 46% rate of single parent families in Glasgow In over half the man handed over his whole wage packet and the woman then gave him some spending money One strand of conflict between gender was simply about money I always thought this was just a part of my family She describes the effect of renovation of the city centre and the focus on commerce as promoting materialistic values in Glasgow s working class money is important for happiness and well being but once basic economic needs are met money does not inevitably mean happiness The humour and language uniue to Glasgow is analysed as diminutive insulting and focused on protecting face with little risk to one s perception by others It is the photograph of my upbringing In this city there was simply too much aggression uarrels and anger and not enough love and gentlenessThis is a book which should be compulsory curriculum for History and English in Scottish schools The prose is clear accessible sympathetic yet firm Far from the detached and apologetic national curriculum Scottish education was not designed either to encourage a love of learning or feelings of self worth Circular 44 created an inherently elitist academic system It needs direct honest accounts like this to undermine Glasgow s anti intellectual insulting and self deprecating working class culture which sees upwards social mobility through a moral lens There is still time to change Glasgow s values limiting them to what workers or the poor have traditionally done I cannot overstate the impact this book has had on me Desire good for your fellow men but desire it because you love them not because a well fed well clad well housed creature will be an economic asset to the state
