(Pretty Monsters) [PDF/EBOOK] ↠ Kelly Link I had high hopes for this collection but for some reason I didn't really get on with a lot of the stories The fact that I enjoyed the latter stories than the ones near the start suggests that this mismatch was as much about me learning to understand Kelly Link's style as it was to do with the stories themselves Things shoot off in surprising but not always entirely satisfying directions the story focussed on

Is a long short story a contradiction in terms I don t know the answer to that but what I do know now is that it is something that Kelly Link is very good at She can back story action and character development into 50 pages than some writers can do with a whole novel However it can be a bit frustrating too as just as you re really immersed in a story it s over Not only that but the stories are often left dangling rather than being fully resolved I m hoping that maybe in a couple of cases this is because she is testing the waters for writing a full blown novel Especially with Magic For Beginners which really need a full book treatment if not an entire series

A successful book makes you actively take part in reading it you can t skim through paragraphs and half read it while watching TV or something This was that kind of book almost every story was one that gripped me made me focus on what I was reading because it was so so confusingenthrallingunrealmagicalabsurdnonsensicalgripping and made me think I wish I could write like this The thought that actually occurred to me while reading this was I didn t realize you could write like this Because I m so used to reading regular stuff I haven t read anything this out of this world ish since I read Shadow of the Torturer by Gene Wolfe This book made me feel the same way as when I read that most of the time I couldn t even understand what was happening in uotes because in a lot of these stories not much actually does happen they re not plot driven by any means but I was mystified in a good way I wanted to keep reading There was always the promise of everything being explained even though after reading the first two stories I already knew that would never happen Haha But unlike Gene Wolfe s New Sun series these stories mixed that complete mystification with regular people which was a really nice juxtapositionAnyways I m going to rate each story individually because while there were some fascinating parallels between them for instance many of the stories dealt with death and how we come to terms with it or not as the case may be I felt really differently about them1 The Wrong Grave liked itIt was interesting and since it was the first one in the book I got a feel for the magical style that Kelly Link has I don t know if I liked the twist at the end but I loved the haiku that Miles wrote and the fact that he was employed by the Weather Channel to write poems about weather patterns And I liked this line Anyone might accidentally dig up the wrong grave I also enjoyed the narrative style friendly and addressing the reader directly2 The Wizards of Perfil 12 liked itI kind of saw where this one was going although I thought that the whole thing was just a trick and that perhaps it was Tolcet who was the wizard It follows Onion and his cousin Halsa who both have a kind of ESP and astral projecting ability as they deal with the legendary wizards of Perfil I loved the paragraphs that listed all of the current rumours about the wizards It reminded me of how when a group is ostracized sometimes there is really no logical reason3 Magic for Beginners loved itHow to talk about thisOkay so it starts off telling the reader again addressing us directly which I enjoyed that there is an episode of a TV show called The Library about a boy named Jeremy Mars But then it turns out that Jeremy and everyone he knows watch the show The Library So which is the show Are both Is the narrator unreliable That to be honest isn t even the biggest mysterySo at the same time we are getting tidbits of Jeremy s story which involves some regular teenage issues parents divorcing torn between two girls friendly suabbles with best friend we re also being told a lot about the show The Library Here are a few of the absolutely wonderful and mind boggling things we are told The pirate magicians used finger magic to turn Prince Wing into a porcelain teapotPrince Wing picked up his leviathan sword the one which viewers know was carved out of the tooth of a giant ancient sea creature that lived happily and peacefully before Prince Wing was tricked into killing it in the enchanted underground sea on the third floorThe Library is a pirate TV show often the commercials aren t in English or in any identifiable language Episodes of The Library have no regular schedule no credits or sometimes not even dialogue One episode takes place inside the top drawer of a card catalog in pitch dark and it s all in Morse code with subtitlesIn one episode of The Library everyone was invisibleOnce Fox got really small and Ptolemy Krill carried her around in his pocketwhich also contained a rare horned Anubis earwig that hadn t been properly preserved The earwig almost ate Fox but instead it became her friend It still sends her Christmas cardsAnd so on I mean what the And what I really really love is like Gene Wolfe Kelly Link never actually explains all of these magical things She just throws it all out there for us it s like she s assuming we get it which is actually pretty flattering noSo yes I loved this story the most I even didn t mind that we never get to find out what was on Talis s t shirt4 The Faery Handbag really liked itA scrabble cheating Grandmother from an unpronounceable ancient village time travelling inside of a tardis like handbag Win 5 The Specialist s Hat 12 liked it but feel uncomfortable about itThis one I actually feel like I should have understood but didn t uite The ending view spoiler Is the twins dad the Specialist Or is the Specialist tricking them into thinking it s their dad I also don t understand why the babysitter Rush s daughter kills the twins Or are they still just playing Dead hide spoiler
