Full disclosure I received a copy of this book in exchange for an open and honest review The opinions contained below are entirely my ownLike many this was my first foray into Captain Olafson s universe I don t mind being dropped in media res when the author does a good job catching you up and Vanessa Ravenscroft does just that While some allusions to prior plot points went a little over my head I was able to get a good grasp of the universe s layout of the characters and what they did It took longer than I d have liked but I did get itAnd what characters they are Furred tentacled ard non corporeal and artificial beings all call the good ship Tigershark home and it picks up along the way Together they traipse through space and planets getting into adventures and knocking heads together or right off One of their troubles is that there s just so much out there the plot bobs and weaves around loosely connected adventures that may all play into a grander plan but make for a disjointed book plot By the end of it I could hardly remember how it started and not for lack of attentivenessAdditionally while I generally enjoyed the cast in action some of their characterizations got a little tired as the book went on There are only so many times I can hear about whatever Captain Erica or Shea are wearing and what they re not at times it s important at others it s a little gratuitous And while I recognize that Captain Erica has a drive to intervene in unfair situations it s a little on the nose when the character s internal monologue says as much and then describes at a number of points an unfair situation that just has to be meddled in It feels like a lot of literal telling not enough showingRavencroft is at her best when the plot picks up and things are getting done and a LOT of things get done The action is extensive and well written and I rarely tired of her and her crew s creative ways of fighting murdering and kicking baddies around It s an impressive feat considering that the characters are generally the biggest baddest and most technologically advanced in the room They re not likely to actually lose a fight but keeping undercover reuires playing down their abilities which makes for an interesting tensionFor those a little overwhelmed Ravencroft offers a veritable Encycolpedia GalNettania you ll understand on her own Wiki but it s not uite reuired reading as what s important is made clear and the details are overall just details Still it s clear that a lot of thought went into this story and its universe if only as much attention went into its editing Stray words missing words they all showed up at least once every few chapters That and it could certainly have been trimmed down a bit not that it was overly long but some paragraphs just felt like they slowed the book downIf you re already a fan I m sure this installment will not disappoint If you re not I m not sure if this is uite the place to start but the characters and world might just be charming enough for you to forgive the occasional misstep Day of Remembrance undercover in the 51st century as Black Velvet a female pirate captain of a mysterious background Thrust into the life of a starship captain Eric Olafson is now the commandin.
