free download Im Frühling sterben free download æ eBook, PDF or Kindle ePUB ´ Ralf Rothmann Ralf Rothmann ´ 7 free download Walter Urban and Friedich 'Fiete' Caroli work side by side as hands on a dairy farm in northern Germany By 1945 it seems the War's worst atrocities are over When they are forced to 'volunteer' for the SS they find themselves. There are of course many novels that focus on the extreme inhumanity of Germany s Waffen SS during the World War II years I don t recall though reading a novel that showcases what involuntary conscription did to Germany s own soldiers To Die in Spring fills that gapTwo teenage German dairy farm apprentices Walter and Friedrich are on the precipice of claiming their lives when they are forced to join the losing Waffen SS effort right at the time when Russia is advancing In doing so they are plunged into a hellish world of continual bombardments the dying and amputated and shell shocked commanders As the war efforts give up their last gasp the innocent pink cheeked boys are lost in a Dante s inferno landscape Walter as part of the supply chain unit and cynical and caustic Fiete as he is known as fodder for the frontlineThere are searing and unforgettable scenes the bodies of emaciated German deserters labeled coward hanging from trees starving livestock a tortured blind woman and her hunchback husband who were deemed to be complicit and so forth Perhaps no scene is uite as haunting as the reunification of the two young friends at one critical juncture in the novel every word vibrates with meaning and the scene is so galvanizing that it literally took my breath away Spare and harrowing this novel serves as a poignant look at the lunacy of war

Well bollocks to it Come on let s go and dieWalter and Fiete two teenage dairy apprentices are press ganged into the Waffen SS in the last months of the Second World War Walter works as a driver and Fiete is sent to the Front The two friends meet again in unimaginably harrowing circumstancesThis is a bleak yet moving story of young lives damaged and destroyed set against the backdrop of the death throes of the Third Reich The imagery is striking grim and eerie especially the contrast between the grotesue chaos of war and the eternal cycle of nature as Spring unfolds across Europe I was reminded a little of The Constant Soldier by William Ryan which also tackles this subject and is highly recommended

Nearly 75 years since the end of WWII perhaps those of us who have imbibed the history and mythology of the conflict from the perspective of the Allied victors should spend time in the shoes of our former enemy Particularly to experience what German victims of the murderous Nazi regime went through in the case of this novel the young men teenagers barely out of short trousers conscripted into the Wehrmacht and Waffen SS in early 1945 when the war was lost the Russians advancing on Berlin and German towns and cities flattened under the onslaught of Allied bombing The novel follows Walter and Friedrich apprentice dairy farm workers tricked into joining the Waffen SS and sent to Hungary An abyss of horror and futility Their training tending to the farm animals with care and respect and bringing new life into being is in stark contrast to the acts of brutality and killing they are now called upon to commitIt is beautifully written and translated by Shaun Whiteside poetic and stark haunting and shocking in its depiction of the brutalities of war powerful in its message like All uiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarue and Guy Sajer s For a Lost Soldier It is also a coming of age story innocent boys sent where there are graves than living people and to desert or to be assumed to have done is to face a firing suad composed of your comrades who will share that fate if they shirk their duty It is a moving story of male friendship and love and family and how the experience of war leads to inarticulate silence in the face of the impossibility of conveying thoughts and feelings to those who were not there to share the brutality and horror
