Once begun I could not put this book down and was gripped to the end I am the last person to admit to enjoying this kind of story because it contains religious content and that always puts me off But I was gripped by the tension of the need for the search for the missing brother and also being a New Zealander myself am always fascinated to read a story set in my own country especially when the setting is in the wilder parts of the country as this certainly was The landscape and riverscape were beautifully described and as important as any characterI like the Maori legend content and the excerpts from the journals of the missing brother as both provided a break from the point of view of the main character The main character was interesting complex and I fully identified with his frustrations The story was well written and free of errors than most commercially published books you read these daysI enjoyed the way our native people seemed to weave their way into this environment and into the story itself The narrator was not pretending to be like them or even to understand them almost the opposite in fact he did not try to hide his alien ness or his confusion at a culture so different from anything he d known and yet he remained open minded and uncritical There was great honesty of viewpoint in this somehow It almost read as though the tangata whenua couldn t be kept out whether the narrator wanted to have them there or not Their rich cultural themes just wound their way amongst the story themes and blendedAnd yes of course the religious aspects of the climactic stages were a drawback for a heathen like myself I have a faith of my own but mine is a very light hearted kind I have no time for the heavier darker aspects of faith and spirituality I think if the author and I were to sit down and discuss spirituality we d probably have a huge argument and disagree utterly But to a catholic or someone with a different less light hearted kind of faith than my own this story climax might be enlightening and exciting For me it was a bit difficult to suspend my disbelief in places particularly over the slightly miraculous occurrences in the storyBut on the whole this book is a good and very different addition to the literature of our land and the kind of thing many people will really enjoy and yet which many publishers would have declined for fear of not meeting mass markets Fortunately in this era books like this can get out to the world for those many people who can and will appreciate it Telling Teddy Dear Teddy Dear Teddy A Journal Of A Boy Volume 2 prolonged illness until she expresses her final wish to see her eldest son Francis who has not made contact from New Zealand for over two years Conrad reluctantly leaves his homeland in a desperate race to find his brother and return home to his dying motherFrancis Murrihy seems jus.
