Having been asked by the author to review his book I really wanted to like it Unfortunately I had some issues with itTo begin with there was Hancu s use of language I don t know what his background is but based on this book I m guessing that English is not his first language There was little that was straight up bad grammar but there was a lot of unorthodox use of English Mostly little things like over use of definite articles and some odd structures Things like compact the houses were and Are you doing it for a long time now but enough to be noticeable For me anyway Understand that I m coming from the perspective of a language professional who specializes in translation and editing As a result I found it very distracting Especially given that the story itself draws attention to language use by having one character freuently correct another s use of EnglishAnd also unfortunately I didn t find the story compelling enough to ignore andor forgive the non standard English It takes the first third of the book for the lovers to be reunited after a chance encounter at a train station and while we did get some decent character building and backstory during this period it was kind of dull and I just wanted things to get movingThe middle third of the book is devoted to building their relationship I get why Hancu wanted to focus on that aspect for a while so we d appreciate the relationship and find their devotion to each other believable a modern criticism of Romeo Juliet is that the whole story takes less than a week and it s hard to believe that that s enough time to develop a relationship worth dying for However again there just wasn t really a whole lot going on during this section We start to understand that Hiroko s father is going to be a problem but all he really does at this point is send a minion to make them uncomfortable Again I found myself just waiting for something to happenview spoilerThings finally picked up in the final third of the book Hiroko s father comes up with this sort of cultural exchange plan ostensibly to help the lovers get better acuainted with each other s family and culture but really to try and keep them apart During this separation Hiroko ends up getting abducted by a polygamous cult and Simon ends up getting incarcerated underground by a terrorist cell The blurb above makes it sound like perhaps those events were part of Dad s plan but I didn t really get that from the book It wasn t really clear exactly how or why Hiroko ended up with the cult or what if anything Simon s parents had to do with that And if her father had an issue with her relationship with an American dude I certainly don t think he d support her effectively becoming a captive concubine of another American so I don t think I buy this as being part of his plan And given that the terrorists who held Simon were not really related to Dad s business and ended up killing him anyway I don t really see him being entirely in control of what happened to Simon either There were really just too many unanswered uestions and loose ends to leave me feeling particularly satisfied by the end If this section had made up a larger proportion of the book maybe it wouldn t have felt so rushed and maybe some of the uestions could have been answered better Instead we get this whirlwind of action and then they both dieNo really It s pretty much that abrupt which I found very jarring I liked Simon and Hiroko once I got over how super creepy I found his attempts to get her whole name and contact info off her luggage tag at that first meeting but I was left pretty cold by their deaths maybe because I just didn t get enough time to process them I will say though that my feminist self did enjoy the fact that Hiroko effectively rescued herself and then proceeded to fly home and almost rescue Simon hide spoiler
