One of the better and as a bonus most uniue books on Icelandic folk tales and creatures availableThe stores in Iceland are now laden with books on Icelandic folktales mostly stories of the elves and the Hidden People and most of them repeat the same 20 or so stories This book is one of the only ones that focuses on creature style as opposed to humanoid beings from Icelandic folk history and is one of only two that I know of that are illustrated the other on elvesHidden Folketc just came out it has a different author and illustrator and this seems the superior bookIt is lavishly illustrated unlike most of the folktale books though sometimes I feel the illustrator that is they seemed to go a bit gruesome in the pictures than the description from the accounts and the text suggested That said the pictures are great they re very well done and definitely convey a sense of what makes these beings otherworldy in a way where they are familiar enough that you have a reference but different enough from real world creatures to be a bit unsettling The size comparisons are niceA final thing I really liked was the inclusion of actual historical accounts from witnesses throughout Icelandic history and the sources are documented which is great You can clearly see how a lot of these accounts were of normal species that may have been deformed or larger or smaller than normal whales cats etc and were thus taken to be monsters but that just adds to an understanding of how these creatures seemed very real to the Icelanders of the time
