E–pub Free Soulless The Manga Vol 1 AUTHOR Gail Carriger This is a graphic novel based on one of my favorite novels I liked it exceptwell the characters were drawn kinda wrong Our heroine is supposed to be a bit plain not the adorable girl in this book Our hero is supposed to be larger And side characters are drawn to look adorable but sloppy The art was nice but it missed the characters

As an adaptation this is excellent All the text is verbatim from the book but the art and dress styles give it a uniue flair that really emphasizes the steampunk elements that felt glossed over in the book and brought the humor to the forefront In a few places I found myself filling in gaps with information I knew from the novel so I m not entirely certain how effective the plotting would be for a new reader You might want to read at least the first novel first Highly recommended nonetheless

The art is amazing Of all the different manga that I ve read in my life I must say that I haven t seen many having these kind of beautiful graphics that you just want to look at over and over again The main characters Lord Akeldama And professor Lyall There were some characters that I didn t imagine being pictured that way for example Lord Maccon but I got used to their appearance and now find that it works pretty well with their personality The setting The story takes place in an historial steampunk Victorian England in which features humans vampires werewolves and some othersThere is a uite developped world building in this manga as well as in the novel That s what I liked the most about it it very well follows the novel and tried to include everything or as much as possible The plot Yes like I said it follows the main story with success and I even found it interesting in the manga for there was no unnecessary descriptions that grew heavy on the plot Things were explained well enough in my opinion but I do think that you would enjoy this even you read Soulless the novel first The writing I actually prefered the manga s writing style because the one in the novel is one I m not used to and it kinda felt absurd or on the humor side from time to time which didn t work for me very much I know I already said it but I don t like absurdity But in general the writing is good both in the manga and novel The romance Oh it was wonderful I mean reading the orignal story I already fell in love with Maccon but after finishing the manga I am than ever bewitched by him and his charms Him and Alexia make such a perfect couple Also there is a bit of a MM couplebut it s not very clear Although I think it will be official if not in the seuel in book or manga 3 for sure Absolutely worth reading

This review stands for the first two volumes in what I hope will be a continuing and concluding manga series that adapts five original novelsI think this story made a better manga than it did a novel For one thing manga plots usually are deeply goofy and don t make a whole lot of linear sense so this slots right in to the expectations of the form Some of the overfill viz genre blending in the novels seemed to drop out in the simplifications needed to change media and the artwork generally was delightfulIt took me a while back when I was first exploring graphic media to realize that comics are rather like movies on paper than they are like illustrated written fiction They have the strengths of the visual media of immediate apprehension of scene and visual detail but miss the main potential strength of written fiction of getting directly and deeply inside characters heads From books whose characters mainly had shallows in that department what was lost in the transition had less impact than what was added in immediacy Also the change somehow punched up the deadpan humor all to the goodThe main character Alexia has no sense of humor that the FBI can detect mind you This is not actually a problem in maintaining humor in the story uite the reverse I am a bit handicapped in judging this example as a stand alone due to having read the original novels all five of em first There is alas no way to rerun the test the other way around with one brain but I mean to foist these first two volumes on a friend for a blind tasting and see how they work for her If one likes manga one would probably enjoy this example if one has never read a manga this seems like a fine one to jump in withIf one is still deeply suspicious of the graphic media generally it might not be a bad idea to start with Scott McCloud s elegant classic Understanding Comics Which everyone should read anyway just for cultural literacyI bought both extant volumes at once and shot through them in one interrupted day I do hope they sell well enough to get the ensuing three parts into print since my favorite minor character the urbane werewolf Professor Lyall gets screen time later in the tales I did my part anywayThis would make a fun anime as well but many are called few are chosen for that apotheosis so I won t hold my breathTa L
